چکیده

Abstract-A plate with a pre-existent through crack is considered under the action of a remote bending moment and a remote in-plane force. The problem statement is reduced to the solution of two coupled integral equations with strongly singular kernels. The independent variables in the latter equations are the closure displacement and rotation angle. The corresponding closure force and moment distributions, and the contact-crack opening boundary (the closure perimeter), are found as functions of the remote bending-compression ratio. The validity of previously stated analytical asymptotics for the contact boundary is examined. The dependence of the extent of closure on the crack length-to-thickness ratio is studied. Comparisons are made with experimental results.

Radial cracking with closure

Progressive radial cracking of a clamped plate subjected to crack-face closure is studied. The material behavior is assumed to be elastic-brittle. The cracks are assumed to be relatively long in the sense that the three-dimensional contact problem can be described via a statically equivalent two-dimensional idealization. The number of cracks is supposed large enough to permit a quasi-continuum ...

Investigating the Effectiveness of a Composite Patch on Repairing Pipes Subjected to Circumferential Cracks under Combined Loadings

The purpose of this study is to investigate bending moment and the axial load capacity of a pressurized pipe suffering from a through-wall circumferential crack repaired by a composite sleeve. The three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) was adopted to compute the results, and the failure assessment diagram (FAD) was employed to investigate the failure behavior of the repaired pipe. The fi...

The Part-Through Surface Crack in an Elastic Plate

An elastic analysis is presented for the tensile stretching and bending of a plate containing a surface crack penetrating part-through the thickness, Fig. 1. The treatment is approximate, in that the two-dimensional generalized plane stress and KirchhoffPoisson plate bending theories are employed, with the part-through cracked section represented as a continuous line spring. The spring has both...

Size Effect in Penetration of Sea Ice Plate

A thorough examination of the quasi-static penetration of a floating elastic-brittle plate via a fracture mechanics approach has been presented by Bažant and Kim. Bažant and Kim reach the conclusion that there is a size effect (in terms of the plate thickness, h). A few of the assumptions made by these authors will be examined in this discussion. The formulation presented by Bažant and Kim assu...

Effect of Through Stationary Edge and Center Cracks on Static Buckling Strength of Thin Plates under Uniform Axial Compression

Thin plate structures are more widely used in many engineering applications as one of the structural members. Generally, buckling strength of thin shell structures is the ultimate load carrying capacity of these structures. The presence of cracks in a thin shell structure can considerably affect its load carrying capacity. Hence, in this work, static buckling strength of a thin square plate wit...
